Here is an example where I had a vision for one of my characters. The character was a real nasty person and I wanted a nasty name but one that had rational behind it.
I remembered a conversation I had with my brother and how he and his friends who give each other nicknames based on a physical flaw or attribute they had. He had a friend he called one eye and it was because he only had one eye. This struck me oddly, but helped me come to the rational I needed to name this particular character. I gave the character very fleshy facial cheeks and everyone called him Butt Cheeks. That is how this character received his name.
Names can come from anywhere

Some of the examples I mentioned are actually humorous on how I came to the final name.

In TurnBack, the two male characters were easy they were names of people I knew and thought they were good fits. The name for the female lead, I was looking for something unique something that sounded special that the reader would remember. The first name was Jasmine Avery, but after several chapters it sounded more like a Disney character than a heroine of the book. Because I was looking at a return to colonial times and the historical state of plantations, I came up with Tara from the plantation name used in the book “Gone with the Wind”.
Names can come from anywhere!

Character Naming:
This can be simple or it can cause all types of frustration. Two of the characters in CrossRoads went through four name changes before I settle on the two I used. It can drive you crazy just trying to name characters. But an easy solution is to 1) think of your character and who it may resemble in your life. 2) If there is a name you like, fit the character to the name.
I will provide examples next time, but for now happy writing!
